Arthropods have an internal skeleton.
The articulated exoskeleton is formed of hard, small plates. It supports and protects the body.
Arthropods are the group highest number.
Arthropods have four groups:

  • Insects. This is the largest group of arthropods. They live on land, but some live in fresh water.
Butterflies, mosquitoes and beetles are insects.

  • Arachnids. Live on land and are carnivores. They eat insects.
    Spiders and scorpions are arachnids.

  • Miryapods. They live on land under the rocks and stones. They eat insects.
Centipedes and millipedes are examples of miryapods.

  • Crustaceans. They live in the sea. Their exoskeleton contains a mineral substance that makes them very hard.
Lobsters, crabs and prawns are crustaceans.
