Arthropods have an internal skeleton.
The articulated exoskeleton is formed of hard, small plates. It supports and protects the body.

Arthropods are the group highest number.
Arthropods have four groups:
- Insects. This is the largest group of arthropods. They live on land, but some live in fresh water.
Butterflies, mosquitoes and beetles are insects.
- Arachnids. Live on land and are carnivores. They eat insects.
Spiders and scorpions are arachnids.
- Miryapods. They live on land under the rocks and stones. They eat insects.
Centipedes and millipedes are examples of miryapods.
- Crustaceans. They live in the sea. Their exoskeleton contains a mineral substance that makes them very hard.
Lobsters, crabs and prawns are crustaceans.
